Canada didn't just ship more aluminium to Europe — it took share in market after market.
US tariffs cut Canada's aluminium exports to the USA by −$2.50B (−30.8%). The metal rerouted to Europe, and Canada's supplier share jumped:
🇳🇱 Netherlands 12.1% → 31.9% (now #1, +$808M)
🇮🇹 Italy 1.3% → 5.6% (+$190M)
🇩🇪 Germany 1.5% → 3.4% (+$127M)
🇵🇱 Poland 1.1% → 4.1% (+$64M)
🇨🇿 Czechia 3.6% → 7.5% (+$33M)
🇸🇮 Slovenia 1.8% → 4.0% (~+$10M)
🇭🇷 Croatia 0% → 4.0% (new)
🇧🇦 Bosnia 0% → 2.4% (new)
Across all of Europe, Canada's share nearly tripled: 2.14% → 6.32% — overtaking the UAE to become the #1 supplier at $1.82B. At +$1,265M it was the single largest supply gain of any country.
The edge: at $2.81/ton, Canada is Europe's 2nd-cheapest supplier (+447k tons YoY).

Cultural Investment Policies: Countries are moving to require major streaming platforms to invest a percentage of their local revenue into domestic content production. This includes Canada's 15% CRTC contribution (2:50-3:06), Germany’s proposed 8% law (0:50-1:01), and existing requirements in France (20%) and Italy (16%) (2:12-2:27).
Washington’s Stance: The U.S. Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, has labeled these domestic cultural policies as "trade barriers" and potential "trade emergencies," arguing they unfairly target American companies (0:41-0:47, 1:30-1:40).
The "Middle Power" Alliance: The video argues that the U.S. is facing a united front of middle powers who are tired of being pressured by American trade demands. By working together, these nations are challenging the assumption that they must adjust their internal regulations to suit the business models of American platforms (7:25-7:43, 9:09-9:22).
CUSMA/USMCA Negotiations: These cultural laws have become a flashpoint in upcoming trade negotiations. The video emphasizes that Canada remains under significant pressure to abandon or weaken its streaming regulations as part of broader trade talks (3:12-3:16, 7:45-8:04).
Core Argument:
The central message is that these policies are not about banning American content, but about ensuring that companies profiting from local markets contribute to the local creative ecosystems they rely on. The narrator frames this as a fundamental shift in global media power, where nations are no longer willing to treat cultural sovereignty as a trade bargaining chip (4:24-4:57, 9:36-9:43).

Getting mad at trump for being trump is like getting mad at getting wet in a storm rather than putting on a rain jacket.
