Ford’s position:
- Canada must “stand firm.”
- EVs sold in Canada should be built in Canada, not imported from China.
- If Chinese companies want access, they should build factories here and hire Canadian workers.
Geely is a Chinese company that owns brands like Volvo, Mini, Smart, Lotus and Polestar.

They have factories in the US and already produce EVs in the US.

Ford, Unifor sound alarm over China EV deal
- This could let Chinese automakers:
- build EVs in Mexico or the U.S.
- undercut Canadian‑made EVs on price
- dominate the supply chain for batteries and components
Ontario has billions invested in:
- Stellantis–LG battery plant (Windsor)
- Volkswagen PowerCo battery plant (St. Thomas)
- GM, Ford, Honda EV retooling
Ford is calling on the Carney government to:
- negotiate Canadian inclusion in any U.S.–China EV framework
- provide new federal subsidies to protect Ontario plants
- impose Canadian tariffs on Chinese EVs to match U.S. levels
- accelerate domestic battery‑supply incentives
He argues that without federal action, tens of thousands of Ontario auto jobs are at risk.

Tens of thousands of autoworker jobs will just move from the big three to BYD and Chery and Xipeng.

They've been protected for too long. Time to compete with actual competition.

An unnamed Canadian official said they believed Trump will eventually open the door to Chinese EVs and put in place guardrails that require the vehicles to be made in the U.S. LOL.

If true, Canada will have first mover advantage. Carney's transformation from investment banker to hard nosed trade strategist is something to behold.

We'll have the battery manufacturers, and the rare earth and steel supply lines.

With NAFTA agreements, they will all count the same as US made.

TLDR They want to create a 'tik tok' China Car maker and then have it majority Canadian owned and using Canadian parts and labour. That won't happen till China has access to sales exceeding 200k annually. Chicken and the egg problem. What goes 1st access or the car plant?
